The Cboe Clear US team is hiring for Sr Principal Engineer.
We are seeking a visionary and highly influential Senior Principal Engineer with demonstrated expertise in capital markets clearing and a deep command of cloud-native architectures, complemented by extensive AWS knowledge, to join our leadership team. This role will drive strategic technical initiatives, define architectural roadmaps, and lead the evolution of our core clearing systems on a global scale. The ideal candidate will be a recognized industry expert, a thought leader, and a transformational leader who can shape the future of our technology and mentor a team of highly skilled engineers.
The Sr Principal Engineer at Cboe will be working on creating the most cutting edge trading and clearing system to power the next generation digital asset exchange. In this role you will work closely and lead with other technologists and financial experts to design, develop, and improve on our critical trading and clearing systems.
You will contribute to the team by helping define engineering best practices, architectural patterns, and standards. Collaboration with other team members to solve complex problems that meet the demands of the financial technology space will be part of your day to day responsibilities.
The systems you will work on will facilitate onboarding automation, account management, movement of funds for both crypto and fiat, blockchain interactions and trading of spot and futures derivatives. Given the critical nature of these systems, they must be designed with high availability and high performance as a key requirement through the use of microservices, reliable message queues, and database clusters.
Your responsibilities will be:
- Strategic Technical Leadership & Vision (Cloud-Native):
- Define and drive the long-term architectural vision and strategy for our cloud-native clearing platform, ensuring portability, scalability, and resilience across diverse on-premise and cloud environments.
- Lead cross-organizational initiatives to standardize and optimize cloud-native architecture and development practices across all engineering teams.
- Evaluate and recommend emerging cloud-native technologies and architectural patterns to enhance the scalability, resilience, and security of our systems.
- Act as a technical advisor to senior leadership, providing insights and recommendations on strategic technology investments.
- Design for cloud agnosticism where possible.
- Industry Expertise & Thought Leadership:
- Establish and maintain a deep understanding of evolving capital markets clearing regulations, industry standards, and best practices.
- Represent the company as a thought leader in industry forums, conferences, and publications, sharing insights and contributing to the advancement of capital markets technology.
- Drive innovation by identifying and evaluating opportunities to leverage cutting-edge cloud-native technologies and approaches to enhance clearing efficiency and risk management.
- Complex Problem Solving & Global Scale (Cloud-Native):
- Lead the resolution of highly complex and systemic technical challenges that impact the scalability and reliability of our global clearing platform using cloud-native patterns.
- Define and implement strategies for optimizing performance and cost efficiency across our cloud infrastructure, with a focus on cloud-native best practices.
- Establish and enforce rigorous standards for code quality, security, and operational excellence.
- Architectural Governance & Standardization (Cloud-Native):
- Establish and maintain architectural governance frameworks and standards for our cloud-native clearing systems.
- Conduct architectural reviews and provide guidance to ensure alignment with best practices and strategic objectives.
- Drive the adoption of reusable architectural patterns and components to accelerate development and improve consistency.
- Mentorship & Organizational Development:
- Provide strategic mentorship and guidance to engineering leaders and senior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation in cloud-native technologies.
- Identify and develop high-potential talent, creating opportunities for growth and advancement within the engineering organization.
- Drive the development of training and knowledge-sharing programs to enhance the technical capabilities of the engineering team.
- Cross-Organizational Collaboration & Influence:
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization, including product management, operations, and risk management.
- Influence technology decisions and drive alignment on technical strategies across multiple teams and departments.
- Act as a key participant in the strategic direction of the technology organization.
- Be able to speak to the advantages and disadvantages of various cloud providers, and how to create a cloud agnostic architecture.
- Extensive AWS Knowledge:
- Leverage deep expertise in AWS services and architectures as a critical component of our cloud-native strategy.
- Provide expert guidance on the effective use of AWS services within a cloud-native context.
- Optimize AWS infrastructure for performance, cost, and security within our cloud-native environment.
The ideal candidate has:
- 15+ years of experience in software engineering, with a significant focus on capital markets clearing and cloud-native development.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing and implementing highly scalable, resilient, and secure systems using cloud-native architectures that are cost efficient.
- Demonstrated experience with business process automation preferably with Camunda.
- Advanced experience in programming languages with Java, JavaScript and Python.
- Experience in architecting, designing and deploying microservices based systems with docker and Kubernetes that are scalable, highly available and fault tolerant
- Experience in database design, data modeling with PostgreSQL, Snowflake and MongoDB
- Proven track record of driving strategic technical initiatives and influencing technology decisions at a senior level.
- Deep understanding of capital markets clearing processes, regulations, and industry standards.
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to lead the resolution of highly complex technical challenges.
- Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proven ability to mentor and develop engineering leaders and senior engineers.
- Extensive knowledge of AWS services and architectures, and a deep understanding of cloud-native development principles.
- Master's or bachelor’s in computer science, Engineering, or a related field.
