About the Role:
Engineering Manager, Backend — Singapore
A hands-on engineering leadership role: you'll set technical direction and own delivery for a team of 15–20 across different locations.
Responsibilities
Technical Direction
- Own the overall architecture and technology choices for the systems under your remit, and carry final accountability for their reliability, performance, and ability to evolve.
- Contribute to design and code review on critical modules, and go hands-on yourself to diagnose and decide on high-complexity or high-risk problems.
- Identify and pay down technical debt, making explicit, defensible trade-offs between delivery pace and system health — rather than letting the trade-off be made by default.
- Drive the adoption of AI tooling across the team's day-to-day workflow (requirements breakdown, coding, testing, code review, documentation), and establish verifiable standards for the quality of what it produces.
Delivery & Team
- Take on business requirements end to end: scope breakdown, scheduling, and resource allocation, owning the scope, quality, and timeline of what ships.
- Build durable working relationships with product, business, and upstream/downstream teams, and hold the team's delivery rhythm steady in an environment of frequent requirement changes.
- Lead a team distributed across four locations: establish async collaboration norms and information-sharing mechanisms so that remote members are not at a disadvantage in either information or opportunity.
- Own goal-setting, performance evaluation, and growth paths for your team; identify high performers, address gaps, and make personnel changes where necessary.
- Participate in hiring: define the candidate profile, uphold the technical interview bar, and own the talent density of the team.
Requirements
- 8+ years in backend engineering, including 3+ years leading teams, with direct ownership of a team of 10 or more. [⚠ internal note — years to be confirmed by CTO; strip before posting]
- Strong engineering depth in Golang, with proven experience designing and shipping high-concurrency, distributed systems.
- End-to-end delivery experience from business requirement to production, with the ability to challenge and shape requirements from a technical standpoint rather than simply taking orders.
- Experience managing distributed or remote teams, with a realistic understanding of the costs and limits of async collaboration.
- Able to work in Mandarin for technical discussion and management communication; professional reading and writing proficiency in English.
- Eligible to work in Singapore, or eligible for an Employment Pass.
Preferred
- Background in digital-asset trading systems.
- Experience with systems for derivatives, options, or structured products.
- Track record of building or restructuring teams during a period of rapid growth.
- An established personal practice of working alongside AI in daily engineering, and the ability to turn that practice into team-wide norms.
