Why Join Us:

At BIT, we tackle complex problems as a team. We encourage openness, transparency, respect and inclusivity, and give every team member a voice. We welcome intellectually curious, entrepreneurial people who want to make an impact in the crypto ecosystem and help build better products for the next one billion users.

Role Overview:

We are looking for a hands-on card-issuing risk and fraud specialist to develop, execute and continually improve the risk strategy for U Card. The role focuses on real-time authorization controls, fraud detection, card-specific loss prevention, risk analytics and partner coordination, including the additional risks of crypto-funded card payments. You will own risk strategy and rule performance, while working closely with the risk operations team on case execution.

Reporting Line:

Reports to the Head of Payment and works closely with the Card Issuing Risk Control Product Manager, Risk Operations, Engineering, Data and external issuing partners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Authorization risk strategy and rules: Design, configure, test, deploy and optimize real-time authorization rules and limits covering transaction velocity, amount, merchant category (MCC), geography, device signals and customer behavior. Assess expected impact before changes, track results after release and document decisions, approvals and rollback plans.
  • Pre-authorization and negative-balance controls: Develop controls for estimated and incremental authorizations, delayed or offline presentment, reversals and authorization-to-clearing differences, including hotel, fuel, car rental and tipping scenarios. Work with Product, Operations and issuing partners to manage exposure, exception handling, funding shortfalls and negative-balance recovery.
  • U Card and crypto-funded payment risks: Assess risks arising from the interaction between digital-asset balances, fiat conversion, card authorization and final settlement, including timing gaps, failed or delayed funding, balance synchronization, refund flows and potential abuse. Define appropriate limits, alerts and escalation triggers with the relevant teams.
  • Fraud detection and investigation: Analyze and respond to patterns including stolen credentials, account takeover, first-party and friendly fraud, merchant or ATM abuse, refund abuse and cashback or rewards exploitation. Lead analysis of high-risk cases, set investigation standards and translate findings into actionable rule, limit and product improvements.
  • 3DS and payment acceptance optimization: Tune 3-D Secure (3DS) and step-up authentication strategies by risk segment. Balance fraud prevention with approval rate, customer friction and false declines, and use challenge outcomes to improve rules and risk segmentation.
  • Disputes, chargebacks and loss recovery: Partner with Risk Operations, the issuer/processor and relevant service providers on chargeback prevention, dispute handling, evidence requirements, representment and recovery. Use applicable early-warning solutions, such as Ethoca or Verifi, where supported by the program.
  • Risk monitoring, reporting and escalation: Monitor fraud loss (bps), fraud/chargeback ratios, approval rate, false-decline rate, alert volumes, manual-review rate, recoveries and negative-balance exposure. Escalate material incidents and breaches of internal limits or applicable card-scheme and sponsor thresholds promptly. Produce management, partner and audit-ready risk reports.
  • Cross-functional implementation and incident reviews: Work with the Card Risk Product Manager on system requirements, with Data/Engineering on rule-engine reliability and data quality, and with the issuer/BIN sponsor/processor on control capabilities and responsibilities. Support launch testing, incident response and post-loss reviews; identify root causes and preventive actions.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or above and at least 3 years of relevant experience (ideally 3–5+ years) in card-issuing fraud risk, card risk strategy or payment risk analytics.
  • Practical experience in an issuing program (debit, prepaid or credit card), including production authorization rules, transaction limits and fraud monitoring. Able to demonstrate better fraud detection without excessive false declines.
  • Strong understanding of the card transaction lifecycle—authorization, holds/pre-authorization, clearing, settlement, reversals, refunds, disputes and chargebacks—and the risk controls at each stage.
  • Working knowledge of card-scheme risk requirements and issuer, BIN sponsor or issuer-processor operating arrangements. Familiarity with Visa issuing is particularly relevant.
  • Strong SQL and analytical skills; capable of measuring rule impact, investigating transaction patterns and communicating data-backed recommendations.
  • Familiarity with 3DS, authentication strategies, dispute/chargeback processes and fraud case management.
  • Sound judgment in a regulated environment, strong documentation discipline and the ability to coordinate effectively across Product, Operations, Compliance and external partners.
  • Fluent spoken and written English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with crypto cards, digital-asset-funded payments or crypto on/off-ramp risk, especially related to funding and settlement flows.
  • Experience with fraud platforms, rule engines or case-management systems such as Featurespace, Sift, Forter, Ravelin, Sardine or Unit21.
  • Familiarity with Ethoca, Verifi or similar dispute early-warning and prevention tools.
  • Python or similar scripting skills for analysis, monitoring automation or rule prototyping.
  • Exposure to machine-learning-based fraud detection and the trade-offs between model scoring and rules-based controls.
  • Mandarin Chinese for collaboration with partners, vendors and internal stakeholders.
